~The Force Unleashed 2~
I've picked this game up twice, at friends' places, who had the game. i finally managed to borrow it from the guy in the previous video who punched me in the jaw. I completed the first play-through rather quickly because i knew how the first half hour of gameplay already.
BUT! This game is still short, very short. i think i completed it in about 5-6 hours, more or less breaks in between, but less than a day none-the-less. I have a problem with games like this, that keep a high amount of action in the game, almost too much action. I wasn't too surprised, since the first game was short as well, but that one was a bit longer than this one. There wasn't a big change in scenery in FU2, you spend almost all game looking at similar looking grey steel corridors, with the occasional hangar or gun room. The biggest change in scenery is when you're in a casino, on your way to rescue kota, other than that you're just in slightly different bases. In the first game you run through huge forests filled with creatures, and visit a wide variety of planets, my memory is a bit foggy since i haven't played it in awhile, but i remember the story well.
I also felt that the overall story of the game was very poorly done. It starts you off as a clone, training under darth vader. You quickly betray vader and escape his base on Kamino, where level 1 begins. From there you get a ship and go rescue kota, after beating a boss, and then you spend the next 4-5 hours trying to rescue Juno. starkiller puts everything aside, JUST to save her from vader. Really the plot is an advanced version of super mario. the tough juno is reduced to a damsel really, which i didn't like. I also think the cutscenes were short and rushed, trying to get the information out, without basing much character or motive other than "I love her, and i don't care about your rebellion, General." Although Starkiller always had tunne lvision.
As far as gameplay goes, i really think they hit their stride with the combat system, and offered a more challenging array of enemies to fight, such as the troopers who can deflect force attacks, saber troopers who resist your saber, the stelthy robots that can only be hit by lightning and counters, and jet troopers who can only be hit by range. They really force you to use all your attacks to proceed. And thats another thing, i use my force lighting 9/10 times i'm confronted by normal troopers, since by the later levels, i can fill a room with lighting and drop them all.
In FU1, occasionally you'd have to fight an AT-ST or some other kind of battle machine. In FU2, especially later in the game, you fight the SAME ICE/FIRE BOTS EVERY TEN SECONDS!!! Yeah, you'll quickly realize that this game recycles the exact same mini-bosses constantly. sometimes you'll fight two icebots at once, oooh real original. if anything else, this game gets tedious, and i mean VERY tedious. it gets to the point where you're only playing to see the ending, which you could look up on youtube and save yourself the time. the last 2 hours are the most teeth-grinding, hand-sweating, controller-throwing hours of your life, as you trudge through the sea of recycled enemies, just to face Vader, who is a total pansy as always.
All vader does, is spar with you for two minutes, then jumps to a high platform, summons enemies, and throws steel pillars at you. you can totally avoid these enemies by the way, and they'll follow you to vader. once there, you can mind trick them into attacking vader (favorite force power btw) While hes distracted, just slash him to pieces. You do this about ten times, before you have to complete several quick-time events in order to finally beat him.
In the previous game, the choice of light vs dark is confusing, and i took the bad ending by mistake, because when it happens, vader attacks you, so i instictively attacked back. i didn't know attacking the emperor was even an OPTION at the time. In FU2, they fixed this. they give you a black and white descision of light side versus dark side for your ending. Light being to let vader live, because Kota is a dumbass, and Dark side is to kill him. i took the light side, since i'm a nice guy. *MEGA SPOILERS, LEAVE NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED YET*
For those still here.... picking the light side, Juno is alive after being hurled out a window by vader. Vader is taken prisoner, and you two fly off in the sunset. Starkiller talks to vader, whos locked up. Vader pretty much gives him no usefull information, and more or less calls him a cocksucker. They leave us with a hook for a third game, of Starkiller going off to find himself or something. Boba Fett takes off in the Slave1 and starts following
For the Dark Side, as you go to strike vader down, you're ambushed and killed by another clone apprentice. The clone kills Kota and the other troops. Vader gets up, dusts himself off, and tells Starkiller before he dies, that jedi cloning HAS been perfected. In this instance, Juno doesn't wake up. Apparently her being alive only happens if the powers of good and love allow her. Vader orders the apprentice to seek out the rest of the rebels, and kill them all. Evil Starkiller agrees, and walks off, passing by Juno's corpse, and he stiffs her without a single emotion. He takes off in a ship and flys into the credit reel.
Overall, its not a bad game, it was entertaining to play, and as a huge starwars geek, i thought it was funny how either decision keeps vader alive, which is why i took the good ending, because i knew that he CANT kill vader. Thats the major problem with this franchise. The hero loses, the hero will always lose, because Vader AND Palpatine need to be alive, since this series takes place between movies 3 and 4, and they can't die. I am forever doomed to play this series, since i MUST play it, as a starwars geek. Thats all i've got. Overall i give this one a 6/10
May the force be with you...... Always.....
